Joe remarked yesterday during a Skype that their house "smelled like Christmas" after Heidi baked some dinner rolls. I too was trying to capture that "Christmas" illusion by trying cinnamon rolls in the toaster over. This was a glorious fully raised batch and unfortunately the height of the oven couldn't handle the top of the rolls and they were charred on the corners. The burned smell didn't totally block out the cinnamon and they still tasted good. Just a bit disappointing to know that it didn't work as expected.
I went back to bed and slept very late. Dennis and Chewy were watching Westerns on TV when I woke up and so I suggested that he go to Gilbert Street to watch an action video and he and Kristen had requested that was due tonight. I wasn't in the mood for shoot-em-up, and so I decided to try to get the book printed and ready to bind. That turned into an all afternoon job. My mom's cell phone photo printing also needed some technology tweaking so I was glad to learn what it takes to save cell phone photos to the card and to get them into a computer. Mom invited us to Pat's house this evening, but it was like the Fox, duck and corn puzzle to figure out how to drive north and still get the animals cared for with no one left in here alone, so we declined.
I fixed scalloped potatoes for Christmas dinner and then decided to have Den and Kristen just come back to Royal Oak for dinner. We finished out the night with the last of the DVD's of Season One of Modern Family. That made for a good evening.
Kristen is back on Gilbert Street. Den is in bed and I'm blogging, desktop publishing and maybe cutting out a t-shirt quilt. My studio door is frozen shut so I couldn't have worked out there today if I wanted to. I'll have to figure out a way to rig up a tiny little gutter system to keep the melting snow from forming an ice ridge on the step. That may be a challenge.
Christmas without family is not right. I'm seeing the wisdom in not celebrating birthdays. My mom always said that most people can't help and didn't have much to do with being born, so why the big ta-do? I'm starting to re-think (or more accurately would be to THINK) traditions that our both cultural and religious. Good night loyal reader, I hope your holiday was all that you hoped for and more positive than negative. It is what it is.
